What to Wear Skiing and Snowboarding
Snowboarding and skiing are exciting sports, but without the right gear, it can be both, messy and uncomfortable. The best advice would be to invest in (or rent) good gear that will keep you comfy and warm on your adventures on the mountain.
The weather on the mountain can vary a lot and often change quickly so it’s important to be prepared for rapid changes and to dress appropriately. When you hit the slopes, dressing for warmth and comfort should be a priority. By having different layers you will easily be able to change in and out of them to better match the climent you’re in.
What Gear Do You Need When Snowboarding and Skiing?
The following is a list of clothing you will need for skiing and snowboarding:
For Body
Wicking Layer: Wear thermal underwear (long johns) made of synthetic fiber that has wicking power.
Insulating Layer: This layer is to keep heat in and the cold out. You can wear light fleece or wool tops, sweatshirts and sweaters.
Protection Layer: This last exterior layer should be able to waterproof your inner clothing from snow and block rain/snow and wind. Wear water and windproof jackets, pants/bibs with convenient pockets for this layer.
For Head
Helmet (while your on the mountain to stay warm, dry and safe) and knit hats (for when relaxing by the lodge)
Protective goggles or sunglasses (You MUST have some kind of eye protection against the wind and UV-rays. You can easily sunburn your eyes without them. Sunglasses will be fine if it is not actively snowing - sunglasses don’t protect against wind or snow so your eyes may still tear up)
For Hands and Feet
Gloves or mittens
Ski and snowboard socks (wool or synthetic)
The idea behind appropriate gear for skiing or snowboarding is to keep you warm and dry as you speed through the snowy dunes. Traditional skiwear is usually neat and trimmed for the need of speed. On the other hand, snowboard clothing is relatively loose to add some style to the sport.
While the traditional gear is followed by most skiers and snowboarders, there is no stark difference in the two styles. In fact, it wouldn’t be wrong to say that there is no harm in swapping one with the other.
