Skin Care On the Slopes; for Skiers & Snowboarders

Anyone who loves to snowboard or ski can tell you that there’s nothing more exciting than seeing a snow capped mountain. Though it’s great that you get to partake in your favorite outdoor activities, the wind, sunlight, and freezing temperature can damage your skin if you aren’t careful. Don’t worry! There  are plenty of ways to ski and snowboard without it taking a toll on your skin. As long as you come prepared with these three items, you will be okay. Check out these tips and tricks on how to do skin care on the slopes.

Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen

Before you head out to Rock House Ski & Snowboard Rentals to get your gear for the day, make sure you have applied sunscreen on your face and any part of your body that will be exposed. The Skin Cancer Foundation has concluded that both high altitudes and the reflection of the UV rays can make you more susceptible to sun damage.  However, this is avoidable if you take the necessary precautions. Broad-spectrum SPF can help stop skin cancer and sunburns. Reapply your sunscreen before runs. To protect against the whipping wind, apply a thick balm on your nose and cheeks. You can get a broad spectrum SPF at any pharmacy or grocery store. You can buy a small tube that can easily fit in one of your jacket pockets.

Protect your lips

In frigid, windy climates, lips can be more susceptible to sunburn and dehydration. In addition to applying to sunscreen on your face, you should also make sure your lips stay hydrated. There are plenty of products out there that can help. When shopping for lip balms, look for products that contain ingredients such as coconut oils, jojoba, almond, vitamin E, beeswax, and shea butter. Though all these ingredients are fantastic, the lip balm should ideally be formulated with SPF. Similar to sunscreen, you shouldn’t just apply it once. Over the course of the day, reapply it every time you get on the lift to get the best outcome.

Moisturize from head to toe

Having dry skin is a very uncomfortable experience. When shopping for your sunscreen and lip balm, make sure to also look for a moisturizer that contains ingredients such as lactic acid or glycolic acid. You should moisturize consistently and thoroughly. The best time to moisturize your skin is when it’s a little damp. So, right after you take a shower, apply the moisturizer from head to toe so you can get fully hydrated. While moisturizing is a fantastic way to protect your skin from damage, there are other things you can do. There’s a wide range of skin types out there so do the proper research to see what fits your needs. Thankfully, there are various anti-aging creams out there that are suited for each of those types. You can take online quizzes to help you customize a routine that’s best for your skin.

You don’t have to choose between enjoying your favorite winter hobby and having youthful looking skin. There’s no need to feel like you’re making a sacrifice. With these three essential treatments, you can hit the slopes without damaging your skin. These items can be found at your local grocery store or pharmacy. Make sure to bring a backpack with you so you can have moisturizer, sunscreen, and lip balm handy — it’s also a great way to bring snacks, water, and anything else you may need throughout the day!

If you are skiing or snowboarding with a group of people, you can have one person be in charge with reminding everyone to regularly hydrate and reapply sunscreen. At the end of the day, maybe get them a treat for their efforts. Are you going to South Lake Tahoe, California this winter? Make sure to stop by Rock House Ski & Snowboard Rentals to get the gear you need for your snowy adventure! As long as you stay on top of your skincare, you will have a great time without stressing too much.  Have fun!
