Know the Rules of the Mountain
Skiing is a dance in the mountains and it is all fun unless you don’t really know the dance steps. Just like any sport or activity - there are always risks involved. Ski collisions and injuries are quite common in the sport. Skiing requires you to be aware of your surroundings and consider more than just your own safety.
There are numerous opinions about what the rules of the mountains are. But there are some essential skiing rules that a beginner skier should be aware of for steep slope safety. Here’s what you should know about the rules of the mountains for skiing on the slopes:
Rules of the Mountains:
Know your ability level and stay within it.
Always stay in control, and be able to stop as well as avoid other people and objects.
Anyone ahead of you has the right of way. You must always let them go first and you are responsible to avoid them.
Stay in control and avoid people and objects. Stop when you have to and never stand in the middle of the trail.
Prior to using any lift, you must have the knowledge and ability to load, ride, and unload safely.
While going downhill or merging into a trail, look uphill and look out for incoming traffic from other trails.
Keep an eye on all posted signs and warnings. Never go on closed trails and out of closed areas.
Prefer to go out for skiing with a buddy system. Always go on far off trails in pairs and triples and be responsible for your buddy(s).
At the end of the day, it all comes down to us individually to use common sense when on the slopes. You should be kind and accommodating to others and always bring along a map and preferably a buddy who has your back.
