How to Have a Successful Family Ski-Day in the Mountains

A family ski vacation is a great way to spend time together and make happy memories. But you are probably familiar with situations at a family vacation where one parent wants to do one thing and the kids another. Especially if you have planned a multigenerational ski trip, it is almost impossible for everyone to want to do the same thing. Sometimes it can be a bit stressful.

Luckily, family ski trips don’t have to be stressful. Ski areas have so much to offer that you can comfortably find plenty of things to keep everyone happy and engaged. Here are a few tips to plan a successful family ski day in the mountains!

Beware of the Weather and Pack Mindfully

Apart from booking a family-friendly resort, one of the most important considerations is the weather forecast for the ski area. The winds and weather in the mountains can change drastically so it is best to wear and carry a variety of ski clothing. Make sure that everyone wears base layers and thermal underwear and takes along neck warmers, mitts, goggles, helmets, toe warmers, etc. For kids, balaclavas can be great as they fit snugly under the helmet. Hand warmers can be a deal breaker for a happy day in the mountains.

Take it Slow

On a family ski vacation, don’t expect everyone to hit the slopes from sunrise to sunset. Especially with kids, take it slow and give everyone a lot of breaks. Pushing everyone to ski for too long at a time can make for some tired and cranky attitudes. Making snow angels and building snow-men in-between runs can sometimes save the day. Remember - skiing should be FUN!

Fun Snow Parks

Take advantage of other activities like tubing, ice-skating, sledding. Most ski resorts also have fun parks for children. There might be igloos, little jumps, rollers and slalom courses. You can also take some snacks and hot cocoa to enjoy at a picnic area nearby to have some quality family time, playing in the snow.

Book Private Family Ski Lessons

Family Ski lessons or group lessons can also be a great addition to your family ski vacation. You can book a full day private lesson for a group of adults or a mix of adults and kids. The lesson will be more beneficial if most of the learners are at roughly the same ability level. But in either case, it will save you the hassle of dropping and picking kids for ski lessons. A private lesson will also save you some time by allowing you to skip some lift lines.

When planning for a family ski trip, make sure to include plenty of activities so that everyone feels included and happy. When all is planned and done for your Lake Tahoe Skiing trip, find the best gear and rentals at Rock House Ski & Snowboard!
